Quick Trip to Hilton Head

As hot, Coronavirus infected July wound to a close, and the kids got more and more miserable being stuck inside with "nothing to do", in desperation we decided to take another little vacation, this time to Hilton Head, SC.

We left Monday morning, July 27th, and made good time to the island.  Our hotel room was pretty nice, especially for a last minute, discount deal.

The first thing we did was go to the beach.

The next day we were all still tired from the long day at the beach, so we spent most of the day shopping at the outlet malls near the island.

In the evening, Old Grump treated Sweetie to a nice dinner at Hudson's, which serves fresh seafood practically straight from the fishing boat.




This was our last summer "fling".  Just yesterday, on the last day of July, the boys returned to school.  (We homeschool our kids, so "school" is simply a video from Abecka Academy we play in our apartment.)

Honestly, the stupid Coronavirus has begun to make us all feel trapped and restless.  I hope that miraculously it goes away real soon, but realistically I'm afraid we're in for a difficult 12 - 18 months.  

Phooey to the idiotic Chinese for not only letting this monster loose, but covering up its escape for several months.  I just hope and pray that the Chinese weren't complete idiots, and did not give this thing the ability to mutate into something more lethal.  If they did, we might be living through the beginnings of an end-of-humanity movie played out in the real world.  Not a pleasant thought to go to bed with.

My Humble Opinion on "Black Lives Matter"

So what's an ignorant, old, grumpy, white man 's opinion of this recent " Black Lives Matter " movement? To begin with, I'm not comfortable with ANY organization that separates people based on, well, anything other than behavior or gender.  (Yes, I'm reactionary enough to believe in only two genders !)  Physical traits, (excepting gender, of course), is absolutely the WORST criteria by which to judge people.   Lump me in with all the folks who proclaim that " ALL Lives Matter ". As for the BLM movement itself, I have serious misgivings with many of their " beliefs ", particularly this one quoted directly from their website : "We disrupt the Western-prescribed nuclear family structure requirement by supporting each other as extended families and “villages” that collectively care for one another, especially our children, to the degree that mothers, parents, and children are comfortable." Driveway Improvements!

Working on the Road Yesterday folks here got tired of my bitching-and-moaning about the horrid condition of the access road and driveway here, so Sweetie paid for some gravel to be delivered, and the neighborhood guys pitched in to help spread it over the muddy ruts. If you remember the prior post, ( A Very Wet Dry Season ), when it rains our driveway turns into a gross mess.  Well, I am very pleased to report that the driveway has been improved, at least temporarily: Our New and Improved Driveway I don't know what will happen to this gravel once the torrential rains of true Wet Season start, but at least this is a much needed temporary improvement.  (I even helped spread some of the gravel across the driveway!) Long term I'd like to put a cement path/patio outside the kitchen door, and cement paths to both the front door and the dreaded outdoor CR, (or at least stepping stones), but I understand that progress here must be incremental.

Are Folks Still Rioting Where You Live?

Although I don't pay much attention to the "news" anymore, and thus tend to be mostly out-of-touch regarding the latest "important events" , I did happen to notice some webpage headlines describing a big, destructive riot in Chicago just a few days ago. Good grief, people; when is this madness going to end? We live in the southeastern part of the USA, in central Georgia to be specific, and while things have been mostly quiet and peaceful here, (due, I would suspect, to a significant portion of the population carrying firearms), Atlanta is just 80 miles or so up the road.  As you may or may not know, Atlanta had some violence due to a man being shot and killed after he fired a taser at a policeman's head, (a fine example of suicide by cop , IMHO).  The idiotic mayor and equally idiotic DA responded by pouring some symbolic gasoline on the fires, so now peace is being maintained in that city by the presence of federal troops.  ( Some things never change , e...
